Ras Kimono, born Patrick Shomso Osei on May 9, 1958, in Nigeria, was a legendary reggae musician who played a significant role in popularizing reggae music in Africa, particularly in Nigeria. Known for his deep voice, Rastafarian beliefs, and powerful lyrics, Ras Kimono was one of the most influential figures in the African reggae scene, blending traditional reggae rhythms with African influences. Ras Kimono first gained major recognition in the 1980s with the release of his debut album Under Pressure in 1989, which included the hit song “Rastaman Connection.” His music often addressed social and political issues, as well as themes of love, freedom, and justice, reflecting his Rastafarian roots. His fusion of reggae with African sounds made him a prominent figure in both the local and international music scenes. Throughout his career, Ras Kimono released several albums and singles, becoming known for hits like “Kpolongo” and “We No Want,” which highlighted his unique style and socially conscious messages.
