Raised in a challenging environment by his mother after his father left, Kodak became involved in crime at a young age, including selling drugs. After multiple run-ins with the law, Kodak's career took off following the release of his debut mixtape Project Baby in 2013, which gained local attention. His breakthrough came in 2016 when his song "Skrt" was endorsed by Drake, significantly boosting his national visibility. Kodak Black's music often reflects his personal struggles, including his criminal background and experiences with the law. His 2016 mixtape Lil B.I.G. Pac and the single "Skrt" marked his rise to mainstream success. Despite his legal issues, including multiple arrests and charges related to weapons, battery, and sexual assault, Kodak's career continued to flourish. His debut album Painting Pictures (2017) was critically successful, and he has since collaborated with artists like Future, Lil Uzi Vert, and French Montana.
