Artur Nunes

Artur Nunes, a renowned Angolan musician, composer, and activist, was born on December 17, 1950, and tragically assassinated on May 27, 1977. During his brief yet impactful career, Nunes became a leading voice in pre-independence Angola, blending Semba, Merengue, Rumba, and Bolero to create a unique sound. As part of the FAPLA-Povo Alliance, he utilized music to spread awareness and support the revolution. Nunes recorded around a dozen singles and two songs on the 33rpm collection Rebita and Movimento, leaving a lasting legacy. Despite his music being banned from radio for over a decade after his death, Nunes is now celebrated as one of Angola's most important musicians and public figures, with his work compiled into a double CD, Memorias, released by Rádio Nacional de Angola in 2004, and honored through the annual festival Super Caldo do Poeira.
